i caved and got devilman g and oh my fucking god im so mad i knew it wasn’t going to be great but i didn’t know it was a fucking travesty against the original series.
the only way i can ease this pain is by breaking it down and writing an exacting review of every tiny thing i hate about it. And there are so many things I hate.
I gotta ask what didnt you actually like about Grimoire, because the origonal Devilman is also my fave manga ever but i still loved G.
Don’t get me wrong, there were parts I liked (and by that I mean most of the perfectly horrible fight scenes, of which there were too few). And these are volumes 3 and 4 I’m mad about—the first chapter of G online looks really good, and I actually do plan on getting 1 and 2 as soon as they reprint.
It’s just that I kinda felt that the constant barrage of shit like schoolgirls giving each other sexy enemas and getting put in bondage ‘training montage’ trash was just a little out of place from the spirit of the original series. JUST A LITTLE. I mean, Devilman was never shy about naked babes, but G has definitely crossed the line into pure jackoff material. I could probably shoulder through it, if it didn’t seem to come at the cost of character development. And some of the most iconic scenes in Devilman have been redone without the main character in them.
I’m all for the development of characters that didn’t get to shine in the original, and honestly pretty dang happy about the inclusion of more demon characters. And Go Nagai is a pervy old dude so I’ll cut him some slack on the endless shitty fanservice. It’s just that I personally feel that the plot’s been sort of lost in the middle of all this. Original Devilman is my absolute favorite manga partly because one of the main themes is society spiraling into chaos, the flaws of human nature, and the slow breakdowns/betrayals/deaths of the main trio as a result of that. It is ULTRA DEPRESSING, and I have a feeling that Devilman G is going to wrap up with a lot more cheesecake and a lot less emotional impact.
In other words, it’s pervy and much less interesting. In my personal opinion, that is! If people are into a lighter, ecchi-filled adaptation, then that’s your cup of tea; it’s just not really to my taste.
